Attitudes towards the mother tongue language
Although they are living in the context of Hong Kong, Geeta, Tessie and Ahmad are still preserving their own mother tongue language, that is Hindi, Tagalog, as well as Urdu respectively.
The three ethnic minorities' attitude towards their mother tongue language are similar. They treat their mother tongue language as a tool to preserve the culture and their nationality. Also, they thinks that it is a tool to connect with their own local community. It is also used for family bonding.
Geeta's Case:
She uses Hindi and Guraji when she is at home to her family. She stressed that she doesn't want to be vexed at an outsider when she is back to Indian. So she needs to preserve it.
Tessie's Case:
Since Tessie is working in local domestic worker agency, she needs to practice her mother tongue language to communicate with the domestic workers and helps them to find employer in Hong Kong. This is more of a work needs.
Ahmad's case:
Ahmad stressed that he is not using Urdu frequently in Hong Kong. But he is still practicing it sometime with his Pakistan friends in Hong Kong and family.
